Since 2016 the Ballarat RSL Sub Branch has called Midlands home. The partnership is built on shared values of community, service, and looking after one another, and brings together veterans, families and the broader Ballarat community.
The Ballarat RSL Sub Branch was established in December 1916 at a meeting convened by the Mayor at Ballarat City Hall, originally as the Returned Sailors’ and Soldiers’ Institute at Lester’s Hotel. After more than a century in central Ballarat, including a long-standing home at the George Hotel, the Sub Branch moved to Midlands in 2016. An old artillery gun stands at the entrance to the venue as a visible marker of the partnership.
– Alexandria Tascas, Ballarat RSL Sub Branch President
The Sub Branch provides pension advocacy, welfare and aged health support, and funeral services. Younger veterans are supported through the Joining Forces program, which connects them with practical resources and the wider veteran community. All veterans, serving ADF members and their families are welcome to use the services.

Monday to Friday, 10am – 4pm
Throughout the year the Sub Branch hosts ceremonies on ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day, along with regular social events including a weekly Happy Hour. Volunteers play a central part in keeping things going. Beyond the calendar dates, the Sub Branch is a place for veterans and their families to drop in, catch up and stay connected. New initiatives are being developed to make those connections easier and more regular.
The Ballarat RSL maintains an online Honour Roll commemorating Ballarat-area service personnel from the Second World War. It is a searchable, public resource. Visit ballaratrsl.cerdi.edu.au to explore the records.
